Drafts around windows and doors are rarely one single problem. Usually, they come from a combination of small issues that build up over years of weather exposure and normal use. Understanding the three main causes will help you decide where to spend your time and effort.

The first and most common cause is simple gaps. These appear where the moving parts of a window or door meet the stationary frame. Over time, weatherstripping compresses, shifts, or wears thin, leaving tiny openings that let air pass through. You can often feel these with your hand on a cool day, or see light coming through the cracks when the sun is low.

The second cause is worn seals around the glass itself. This applies especially to older double-pane windows, where the seal between the glass layers can fail. When that happens, the insulating air or gas escapes, and you may notice condensation forming between the panes. This is a different problem from a simple draft, because the air leak is not actually entering your home—the window just loses its insulating ability.

The third cause is thermal bridging. This happens when a material that conducts heat well, like metal or solid aluminum, connects the inside of your home directly to the outside. Pick a day with a noticeable breeze. Close the window or door completely, then run the back of your hand along the edges, starting at the top and working down both sides and across the bottom sill or threshold. Your skin will feel the cool air before you can see it. A lit candle or a flashlight beam works too: hold the flame a few inches from the seam and watch for flicker, or shine the light along the gap from the inside while a helper stands outside at dusk. Move slowly and mark any suspicious areas with a piece of painter’s tape.

Pay close attention to these often-overlooked places:

  • Hinges and the latch side, where the seal may compress unevenly.
  • The top and bottom corners, where frames settle and gaps open up.

Choose the Right Weatherstripping for Each Spot

Weatherstripping only works if the material matches the job. The biggest mistake is buying one type and forcing it into every gap. Different spots on a window or door move, settle, and expand in different ways, so the material needs to suit the space.

Adhesive foam is the easiest option for small, uniform gaps on window sashes that do not slide often. It compresses to fill the space, but it also wears out quickly if it rubs against moving parts. Use it where the gap is consistent and the surface is clean and dry.

V-strip (also called tension seal) is a better fit for the sides and tops of double-hung windows or doors that slide. It creates a spring-like seal that bends with movement, so it holds up longer than foam in these spots. It works best where the gap is narrow and fairly even.

Felt is cheap and fine for blocking drafts in spaces that do not get much friction, like the top of a door frame. It does not compress much and can absorb moisture, so avoid it on the bottom of an exterior door or anywhere it will be exposed to rain.

Tubular rubber handles wider, uneven gaps and is the right choice for the bottom edge of an exterior door. It presses flat against the threshold and stays flexible in cold weather. It takes more effort to install, but it lasts longer than foam or felt in high-wear locations.

Before buying anything, measure the gap with a simple folded piece of paper. If the material is too thick, the door or window will not close properly. Too thin, and it will not touch both sides. Matching the material to the movement and the gap size is what actually stops the draft.

Seal Gaps That Move and Gaps That Don’t

The first step to a lasting draft seal is recognizing that not every gap behaves the same. A gap that stays fixed in size—say, the crack between your window trim and the siding—is a good candidate for caulk. But the space between a window sash and its frame changes slightly with temperature, humidity, and daily use. That is a moving gap, and it needs weatherstripping, which flexes with the parts instead of fighting them.

For stationary gaps, choose a paintable latex caulk for interior work. On the outside, look for a silicone or hybrid formula that remains flexible after curing. If a stationary gap is deeper than it is wide, push in a foam backer rod before applying caulk. This gives the caulk a solid backing and prevents it from sagging into the void, which also means you use less material per tube.

Use minimal-expanding spray foam only for larger, hidden openings, such as the gap between a door frame and the rough wall framing inside. A common mistake is overfilling the cavity. Spray foam expands as it cures, and too much can bow the frame or push the door out of square. Fill the gap halfway and let it cure before trimming any excess flush with a utility knife.

  • Backer rod: deep stationary gaps before caulking.
  • Weatherstripping: around operable windows and door edges.
  • Spray foam: big hidden cavities behind trim, used sparingly.

The key is to make the roll snug against the floor and the door edge so air cannot slip around the ends. You can secure the roll with a few rubber bands or tuck the ends under a nearby rug, keeping the setup entirely reversible.

For a slightly more polished look without sewing, fold a long piece of fabric over the rolled towel and tie the ends with ribbon or twine. This creates a simple draft stopper you can remove in seconds when you need to open the door fully. It works best on interior doors or rarely used exterior doors, since it will not hold up to heavy foot traffic or wet shoes.

If the gap under your exterior door is consistent and you want a more permanent but still removable fix, consider a door sweep with screws or a self-adhesive threshold seal. These are sold at most hardware stores and can be installed in minutes with a screwdriver. Unlike caulk or foam tape, a sweep can be unscrewed and taken off when you move or when the seasons change.

  • Check the gap visually: hold a flashlight on one side and see if light leaks through the other side.
  • Feel for drafts with the back of your hand around the door frame and bottom edge on a windy day.
  • If the door itself is warped or the frame is rotting, a draft stopper will only hide the symptom; that job is for a carpenter.

Just keep an eye on the glass; if you see heavy condensation or frost building up, the humidity is too high for the window’s condition, so dial it back.

Certain checks are safe to do yourself. Look for small cracks in caulk or peeling paint around the frame. You can carefully reapply fresh caulk to these spots, ensuring the surface is clean and dry first.

  • Check that the latch or lock engages fully; a loose latch allows the sash to vibrate in the wind.
  • Feel for a persistent, noticeable air leak on a still day by running a hand along the edges.

However, stop at the point where the fix is more than cosmetic. Call a professional if you notice rotted or soft wood that crumbles when pressed, broken or foggy window glass, or a visible, structural gap between the frame and the wall. These are signs of deeper moisture damage or foundation movement that caulk will not solve. Attempting to seal these yourself traps water inside the wall and leads to costlier repairs.
